E3 2015: Rise of the Tomb Raider Preview

2013’s reboot of Tomb Raider made the series what it always should have been – a highly emotional, roller-coaster ride filled with action, adventure, and heart. Tied with Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, this was my choice for Game of the Year 2013. I have since replayed through the game two, maybe three, times and I have loved every minute of it. Not only the character detail, but the world around her felt alive and fun to traverse through. The release of 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, appears to be everything we previously received with a few more surprises add in.

Before I go on with the preview and the information we have on this title so far, allow me to clear up some confusion that a lot of us had about what console(s) you will be able to play this on. When first announced, Microsoft said that it would be an Xbox exclusive, only on the Xbox One and Xbox 360. This made fans outrage, myself included because I want to have this on the PS4, and months later, a formal apology was made by Microsoft for the confusion of so-called exclusivity. “We did not mean that Rise of the Tomb Raider would only be on the Xbox One and Xbox 360. It is more of a timed exclusive, coming first to our consoles before any other.” It will eventually go to other platforms, but when it is released in this year’s holiday season, it will only be available on Xbox.

The story for the 2013 title followed Lara and friends on an adventure throughout Yamatai, an island on which a very scared and untested Lara develops her will of survival, as she attempts to rescue her friend, Sam, from a crazed religious cult and their leader, Mathias who worship their Sun-Queen, Himiko. Rise of the Tomb Raider continues after this story, with a secret organization known as “Trinity” covering up the events that took place on Yamatai. Lara, in an attempt to prove to the world she isn’t crazy, sets off to uncover the truth about other worldly myths. Lara and a friend, travel to Siberia in search of an ancient city named Kitezh, a city built in the 13th century and believed to hold the secrets of immortality. In a race against the Trinity organization, Lara must survive against wild animals, other humans, and the deadly environment to discover the truth and solidify her destiny.

The first actual trailer was revealed at E3 this year and it looks stunning. The trailer begins showing her in a cold, cold place, freezing and salvaging a deer she killed. It shows her breaking through walls of some sort of prison, making her way through caves filled with skeletons, then through a mine, then swimming underwater(!!!) through the wreckage of a ship, and fighting a wild, ravaging bear. The last scene shows her in a ruin, where she says, “Finally, this is it.” and it cuts advising you to pre-order the game, which I must also suggest you do as I know I will be. While the trailer plays, this is narrated…

“Something else draws in the darkness of this place, but I’ve got to continue. I finally feel a sense of purpose again, like I’m doing what I was meant to do. The journey will be perilous, but I must find a way.”

I can’t wait fans. The hype on this is real and I believe it will be every bit as big an adventure as the first one. In Tomb Raider, we saw Lara become a survivor. In this sequel, we will see her become a tomb raider. The Game Director, Brian Horton, said that what is seen in the trailer is only a glimpse of what the tombs have to offer and assures players that the act of  “tomb raiding” will be a much bigger part of this game. Rise of the Tomb Raider is set to release November 10th, 2015.
